Assistant professor of food safety and security, Justin Kastner (PhD, University of Guelph, 2003; Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health, University of Edinburgh, 2000; MSc, London South Bank University, 2000; BS, Kansas State University, 1998) conducts scholarly activities related to trade policy, economic history and the history of science, international political economy, and multidisciplinary research and writing.  In tandem with Dr. Jason Ackleson of New Mexico State University, Dr. Kastner coordinates Frontier—an interdisciplinary program for the historical studies of border security, food security, and trade policy.  Dr. Kastner publishes and lectures on an array of issues: the World Trade Organization (WTO), the WTO Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, veterinary history, the history of public health, North American border issues, and the history of trade disputes regarding food safety and animal disease.  Dr. Kastner examines both historical and contemporary trade-policy questions.  Dr. Kastner provides perspectives and lessons from the past.  Dr. Kastner serves as co-instructor for the graduate courses Multidisciplinary Thought and Presentation and Trade and Agricultural Health.  He is actively involved with both on-campus and distance education.
